George Weah sworn in as Liberia’s 24th president (Photos)
Former international footballer, George Weah has been sworn in as the 24th president of Liberia.
The 51-year-old was sworn in on Monday afternoon by the chief justice of the Supreme Court, Francis Korkpor. The ceremony took place at the 35,000 capacity Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia.
Several African heads of state were in attendance, including Vice Present Yemi Osinbajo who represented President Muhammadu. Senate president Bukola Saraki and former president Olusegun Obasanjo, including Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha also attended the swearing-in ceremony.
Legendary Nigerian footballer, Jay Jay Okocha was also among international soccer stars who witnessed the ceremony this afternoon.
Weah defeated his 73-year-old opponent, Vice President Joseph Boakai in the December 26, 2017, run-off election. He replaces Africa’s first female head of state, economist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
The retired footballer is a former AC Milan International and also the first African footballer to win the FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or.
