‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Pays Homage To Will Smith: ‘There’s A Good Nod’ To Him

There’s one major person missing from ‘Independence Day: Resurgence,’ and that’s Will Smith. HollywoodLife.com talked EXCLUSIVELY with star Bill Pullman and the movie’s writers about how the sequel remembers Will’s classic character!

Independence Day: Resurgence is hitting theaters 20 years after the first film became an epic blockbuster. At the film’s big Los Angeles premiere, HollywoodLife.com learned EXCLUSIVELY how the movie will pay homage to Will Smith’s character from the first film. Writers James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright even reveal if they would ever write Will back in for a future sequel!

“I think there is a nice homage to Will,” Bill told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “Yeah, I think there is a good nod, and his son played by Jessie Usher is really a continued reference in a very cool way!”

Will was working on Suicide Squad when the sequel started filming, so he wasn’t able to reprise the role of Hiller. In a shocking twist, Will’s character was killed in an “alien tech malfunction.”

“If we can be honest, for him stepping away in part two, we owe so much to Will Smith,” James said. “When we finally do get to hang out with him, we will tell him that it was one of the greatest things to happen in our lives because we were able to get our hands on the script and do some rewrites that hopefully led to a great film!”
